بعد أن نزل ادم عليه السلام و زوجه حوّاء إلِى الأرض, بدأ ادم في رسالته على الأرض, وهي عمارة الأرض بمن يحمل كلمة التوحيد.
وكنت حوّاء زوجة ادم عليه السلام تلد في كل بطن طفلين ذكرا و أنثى, وكن ادم عليه السلام يزوّج ذكر كل بطن بأنثى البطن الآخر, لأنه لم يكن على الأرض غير ادم و أبنائه.
و كانت حوّاء قد ولدت هابيل و أختا له في بطن, كما ولدت قابيل و أختا له في بطن فأراد هابيل أن يتزوّج بأخت قابيل, وكان قابيل أكبر من هابيل.

وذات ليلة تأخّر هابيل في الرّعي, فبعث ادم أخاه قابيل لينظر ما أخرّه, فلمّا وجده قابيل هدّده بقتله, ولكنّ هابيل لم يقاومه, بل قال له: لئن حاولت قتلي فلن أحاول قتلك, فإنّي أخاف الله.
فحمل قابيل صخرة, ثم رماها على رأس أخيه فهشم بها رأسه, فقتل أخه. فكانت هذه أوّل جريمة قتل وقعت على وجه الأرض, وسوس بها الشيطان لقابيل ابن ادم, فقتل أخاه هابيل حسدا وحقدا.
ولأن هابيل كان أوّل من يموت على وجه الأرض, فإنّ قابيل حملهعلى ظهره زمن طويلا, لا يدري ماذا يفعل ليداري جريمته وظل يسير بأخيه, لا يدري ماذا يفعل, وماذا سيقول لأبيه عن تلك الجريحة الّتي فعلها.
